By  |

Tonsil-stones (tonsilloliths) are off-white, small deposits that can be seen in the craters of some people’s tonsils. Tonsils are usually caused by bits of food that get lodged into the craters and then bacteria begins feeding on them while digesting them until they eventually turn into smelling-gunk that most people really hate. On the other hand, tonsil-stones are very common among-st people with deep tonsil-craters but these stones are usually dislodged while eating and coughing hence this makes medical intervention often unnecessary. However, there are several methods that can help you remove tonsil-stones coupled with several home tools and tools that will all be of great use during the process of removing tonsil-stones.

MEHTOD-1: MEDICAL INTERVENTION (MEDICAL-WAYS OF REMOVING TONSIL-STONES):

  1. Take antibiotics for severe and persistent tonsil-stones: in case you experiencing persistent and severe tonsil-stones, then there are several antibiotics that can used to treat those tonsil-stones and these include penicillin or erythromycin. However, these antibiotics will fail to reverse the cause of tonsil-stones which is food that is being caught in the tonsil-craters. Additionally, most antibiotics have adverse side-effects like they may kill the good-bacteria in the gut and mouth which would have helped to fight against the bad-bacteria.

  1. Consider going for a laser-treatment: you may also consider going for a laser-treatment in order to remove any tonsil-stones from the tonsil-craters. Additionally, the tissue that forms the deep tonsil-pockets can be easily removed while using a laser. In fact, laser treatment/resurfacing helps to smoothen-out the surface of the tonsils and this implies that there will no longer be any tonsil craters and pockets.

  1. Try going for a surgery to completely remove the tonsils: Tonsillectomy is a surgery that involves removing your tonsils entirely if tonsil-stones persist. In fact, this surgery is very simple and effective when it comes to eliminating tonsil-stones. However, studies show that tonsils are meant to protect against infections but at the same time people without tonsils may not necessarily be more susceptible to infections hence making tonsils useless. All, in all, people without tonsils will not experience tonsil-stones and this actually makes surgery a perfect choice for those who wish to get rid of tonsil-stones completely.

MEHTOD-2: GARGLE AS A WAY OF REMOVING TONSIL-STONES:

  1. Gargle using a mouthwash: you should gargling using a mouthwash immediately after eating in order to remove tonsil-stones since these stones usually form when leftover food gets stuck into the tonsil-crater. Additionally, a good mouthwash will help to improve on your teeth and gum health and also dislodge any tiny bits-of-food before they turn into tonsil-stones. So, try gargling for about 1-to-2 minutes and if there are any tonsil-stones then they will be removed during the gargling-process.

  1. Gargle using salt and warm-water: you may also consider mixing 1-teaspoon of salt with 6-ounces of warm-water and then stir-up the solution until all the salt is dissolved. Put the salty-solution into your mouth and then start gargling with your head tilted backwards. In fact, salty-water will help to dislodge any bits of food from the tonsil-crater and even help to soothe on the discomfort caused by tonsillitis which at times accompany tonsil-stones.

  1. Consider gargling using oxygenating mouthwash: oxygenating mouthwashes actually contain chlorine-dioxide and natural zinc-compounds. In fact, oxygen alone will hinder bacterial-growth and this makes oxygenating mouthwashes very essential when it comes to preventing and treating tonsil-stones. However, oxygenating mouthwashes are very powerful and they should only be used for once or twice a week in order to prevent side-effects due to overuse. So, it’s recommended to supplement a natural mouthwash routine with an oxygenating mouthwash for best results.

METHOD-3: USING A BOBBY-PIN OR Q-TIP TO REMOVE TONSIL-STONES:

  1. Prepare the materials to be used: bobby-pins and Q-Tips are almost the same whereby the only difference is that bobby-pins use a hooking-motion and Q-Tips use a scraping-motion. So the materials you will need when using this process include; sterilized or new bobby-pins, new Q-Tips, a mirror, paper-towel, light-source and water.

  1. Open your mouth and flash light into it: you will have to open your mouth widely and then flash light into it. Additionally, make sure that you do this in-front of a mirror so that you can be able to locate or see the tonsil-stones.

  1. Flex or close-off the throat-muscles as you stick-out the tongue: try to flex or close-off your throat-muscles while sticking-out the tongue because this will help to tighten the muscles at the back of the throat. Additionally, consider doing this while holding your breath as you would when gaggling water. This will actually help to push your tonsils forward so that you can be able to clearly see the tonsil-stones if there any available.

  1. Scoop-out the tonsil-stones using a bobby-pin: this involves using the looped-end of your bobby-pin to gently scoop-out any tonsil-stones that you may easily see at the opening of the tonsil-craters. Try to be very gentle during this process because bleeding may occur and this means that wounds may develop and get infected by bacteria that cause tonsil-stones. On the other hand, tonsil-stones can at times be a bit hard to get out since they are stickier than normal saliva. So, always be gentle when trying to remove tonsil-stones while using a bobby-pin so that you don’t damage the throat tissue.

  1. Take some water if sticky-saliva begins to form: if you notice that sticky-saliva has started forming, consider drinking some water in order to thin it out. In fact, sticky-saliva will tend to form more quickly after gaggling or coughing and that is why it’s very important to clear-out this saliva before you begin extracting any tonsil-stones. So, drinking some water will help to make the tonsil-stone extraction process much easier.

  1. Discard the extracted tonsil-stones onto a paper-towel: after extracting the tonsil-stones, you will need to discard them onto a clean-surface like a paper-towel. So, you may use another bobby-pin or toothpick to scrape the extracted tonsil-stones onto a paper-towel. Additionally, try to minimize on cross-contamination since you will be sticking the bobby-pin back into the mouth.

  1. Check if there are any hidden tonsil-stones: after extracting all the tonsil-stones that you can see, try placing your thumb into the neck-section that is under the jaw. Use your clean index-finger to gently squeeze any remaining tonsil-stones to tonsil-opening like you would do when squeezing-out toothpaste. If there are no stones showing-up, then just assume that there aren’t any remaining tonsil-stones. Additionally, some tonsil-craters a very deep and this at times makes it very hard to remove all tonsil-stones. however, if there are any tonsil-stones coming out then consider using a scooping motion to gently pull them out but make sure that you don’t scrape the tonsils because this can be painful and can even cause a serious infection.

  1. Repeat the above steps on both craters: you will need to repeat all the listed steps above for each of the craters until you notice that all the tonsil-stones have been removed. However, take extra care during the tonsil-extraction process so that you don’t damage any skin-tissue within your mouth. In fact, wounds in the mouth can be painful and can even become infected.
