How To Clean And Maintain A Dishwasher

You don’t expect a dirty dish washer to clean your dishes but make them even dirtier. It is very unhygienic and unhealthy to do your dishes in a filthy dish washer therefore always spare some time to clean your dish washer. Cleaning a dish washer is not just good for your health but also good for maintenance of the machine, a clean dish washer will always perform perfectly. If the interior of the dish washer has a terrible smell, your cutlery is always stained with food after the washing cycle or if plates are getting rusty or dirtier after the cycle then you must know that your dish washer needs to be cleaned because these are very clear indicators of a dirty dish washer. Cleaning a dish washer:

  • Make a water and vinegar solution in the sink: have the filled up and then add 2 cups of vinegar. The main essence of adding vinegar to water instead of using just plain water is to take the bad smell that your dish washer might have when it is dirty. Just in case you do not have vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice can also be very helpful alternatives.
  • Remove the drawers and racks: these are very easy to wash separately so after removing them you can soak them up into the sink if they fit in there and if they do not feet wash with the solution in the sink. Scrape off any food particles that may be stack on the racks.
  • Look inside the dish washer to see if the spray arms are free of remains: if the spray arm cannot rotate freely and the water does not easily pass through then it means there is debris causing it. Take up a tooth pick or any other sharp pointed object that can help to unclog the holes of the spray arm, however be very careful while removing the dirt because scratching could instead damage the machine.
  • Wipe the machine with a damp cloth: around the gasket and door edges gets really dusty yet it cannot be cleaned during the cleaning cycle so you have to wipe the area manually. Dampen a clean cloth in your vinegar solution and clean these areas in the corners where a cloth get reach use an old tooth brush it is gentle enough yet effective in getting any dirt out of those corners.
  • Run a bleach cycle to get rid of mildew: this should only be applied if your dish washer is not made of stainless steel. If you spot any mildew in the dish washer then add bleach to the machine and let it run, make sure the dish washer does not contain any other chemicals or cleaning agents because bleach can badly react with any other chemical agents.
  • Detach and the filter and clean it: some dish washer have removable filters so if you have one of those remove the filter to remove any dirt that may be stuck to it.
  • Pick out solid food leftover: if there is any solid waste that you can easily spot, pick it out with your hands.
  • Work on any rust stains: sometimes the water you use contains a lot of iron hence leaving some rust stains in the dish washer therefore use rust remover that is dish washer to remove them.
  • Wipe the exterior: your exterior also gets stained with dust so wipe it clean to keep your dish washer looking new every other time. Do not forget to replace all the dish washer parts that you had removed while cleaning.

 

Maintaining your dish washer/ dish washer maintenance tips:

  • Always start with hot water: find smoothing to use the cold water that first runs out of the tap so that it does not seem like a wastage of water so that you run your dish water hot water. Water that is cold will not clean your dishes well yet water that is too hot is also not good for your machine and dishes.
  • Run regular empty cleaning cycles: this helps you to keep your dish washer function properly and also prevent debris from building up in there. You can run a short plain water cycle to reduce the hard you have to go through when deep cleaning the dish washer.
  • Always ensure that thee garbage disposal is clear: sometimes the dish washer performs poorly because the garbage disposal if full reason being the sink also uses that same disposal so before running the dish washer try to ensure that it is clear.
  • Occasionally run the dish washer with vinegar: vinegar helps to get rid of any ugly smell in your dish washer and also contains acids that are very good at getting rid of residue from the machine leaving sparkling clean.
  • Always get heavy food waste or remainders off the dishes before putting them into the dish washer: this does not take too much effort yet it keeps your dish washer functioning perfectly. Solid and heavy food remainders clog the water spray.
  • Always be careful with the small items: any smaller items such as forks and spoons that you clean in the dish because they can easily slide through the racks into the dish washer’s heating element. Try to properly enclose them all into their basket.
  • Allow the dish washer to cool off: every after cycle leave the door open so that the dish washer can air, this reducing chances of the machine getting built up with mold.
  • Be very careful with the products you use in the dish washer: any products that are not labeled safe to be used in the dish washer should never be used however great they work. For those that have dish washers designed with a stainless steel interior endeavor never to use bleach.
  • Replace any rusty or flaked racks: if racks are badly flaked and filled up with rust then they should be definitely be replaced.
